Kirov Ballet Tours Brazil, May-June 1998

The Kirov Ballet leaves St. Petersburg with a full company on May 10 for a month long Brazilian tour. Return to Russia is scheduled for June 8. Performance dates in Brazil will be May 12 through June 7.

Cities the company will visit include Sao Paolo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia and others. The complete schedule is not available.

On the program will be Giselle and La Bayadère. Tentatively (as always with the Kirov), Giselle will be danced three times by Yulia Makhalina, twice by Diana Vishneva, once by long-time favorite Altynai Asylmuratova, and once by rising star Svetlana Zakharova, the young lady that Ballerina X portends to be the "classical ecstasy of the new millenium."

Other principals going along include Maya Dumchenko, a bright, lively sprite in any of her roles, and Elvira Tarassova, the ballerina who this past month has been called on a number of times to jump in at the Maryinsky when the scheduled star got scratched. In the Kirov tradition of making cast changes while the curtain is going up, Brazilian fans will surely be treated to both Ms. Dumchenko's energy and dramatic power, as well as to Ms. Tarassova's fire, defiance, and joy.
